StormStock Glossary
The following is a glossary of terms used on the StormStock website.
CG n : An abbreviation for cloud-to-ground lightning.
crawler lightning n, slang : A term for cloud-to-cloud lightning that spreads or "crawls' across the sky. This type of lightning is relatively rare and produces some of the most spectacular light shows for sky watchers. Also anvil crawlers.
Eastman Kodak Vision (5246) 250D brand : Eastman Kodak Vision 250D 35mm motion picture film stock is the preferred acquisition medium for StormStock. It is a medium speed, fine grain, daylight-balanced film emulsion producing very high quality motion images.
F-Scale n : a method of measuring tornado intensity created by tornado research pioneer Dr. Theodore Fujita. In summary: F0-F1, weak tornado; F2-F3, strong tornado; F4-F5, violent tornado.
flood n : a rising and overflowing of a body of water, esp. onto normally dry land. A flash flood is a sudden flood which can sweep away property, automobiles and people in seconds. Flash floods kill more people in the US than tornadoes and lightning combined.
hail n : Frozen precipitation in the form of lumps of ice, or "stones" created when rain is pushed above the freezing level by a thunderstorm's updraft. Hail stones grow larger with subsequent passes until they become too heavy to be supported by the updraft and fall to earth.
hurricane n : A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph or more occurring in the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific Oceans. The strongest hurricane, a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale can produce sustained winds of 155 mph or greater and can cause catastrophic damage.
lightning n : A visible electrical discharge produced by a thunderstorm from one cloud to another or from cloud to ground. Lightning kills more people in the US than do tornadoes.
microburst n : A small, very intense downdraft affecting an area of less than 4 kilometers wide. Microbursts are capable of producing winds of more than 100 mph causing significant damage on the ground. They are a serious threat to aviation
rain n 1 a : water falling in drops condensed from vapor in the atmosphere.
Spirit Datacine brand : All StormStock 35mm motion picture negative is transferred to videotape via the Spirit Datacine, the highest quality telecine available. Original transfers are made to HDCAM 23.98, 16:9.
storm n, 1 a : a disturbance of the atmosphere attended by wind and usu. by rain, snow, hail, sleet, or thunder and lightning.
storm chaser n : A person who chases storms, especially violent storms such as tornadoes, hurricanes and supercell thunderstorms. Veteran storm chasers forecast and intercept some of the most dangerous weather on earth. The term "storm chaser" originated in the 1950's.
storm clouds n : Clouds that produce stormy weather such as cumulonimbus clouds. Also thunderstorm and thunderhead.
supercell n : A thunderstorm with a persistent, rotating updraft. The rarest thunderstorm type, the supercell, produces the most violent weather including the most significant tornadoes, giant hail, deadly lightning and damaging microburst winds. The supercell thunderstorm is the primary target of StormStock photographers. Also mesocyclone.
time-lapse n : A method used in motion picture photography to condense time. The traditional process is to capture a single frame, or picture, of a dynamic subject such as clouds at a rate that is equal to a fraction of real time. If one frame is photographed once every second, and the series of frames is played back at 24 frames per second (fps), then the subject will progress at 24 times real time.
tornado n : A violently rotating column of air associated with a thunderstorm that is in contact with the ground. Tornadoes are categorized as weak, strong or violent with winds of up to, or more than 300 mph.
tower n : An abbreviated term for storm tower, towering clouds or updrafts that rise and make up part of a storm. Towers that rise rapidly are an indication of a storm that is intensifying. Also updraft tower.
tracking shot n : A shot made from a moving platform such as a dolly or automobile.
typhoon n : A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph or more occurring in the Western Pacific Ocean.
weather tools n : Tools used to aid weather forecasters in the observation and prediction of weather including weather balloons, weather radar, satellites, computer forecast models and weather observation systems.
